How does BarkScope work?

Record your pet in your browser (no app install needed). BarkScope uses the Web Audio API and FFT-based pitch detection to extract acoustic features locally on your device. Audio never leaves your browser during analysis. Results include a 3D visualization, numeric measurements, and research-backed observations.

Can I use BarkScope to track my dog's barking over time?

Yes. BarkScope includes a vocal journal that stores each recording with its acoustic measurements, context tags, and timestamps. The trends view shows F0, HNR, and vocal roughness over days or weeks, helping you build your pet's vocal baseline and notice changes.

1. Agreement

By accessing or using BarkScope (barkscope.com), you agree to these Terms of Service and our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the service. BarkScope is operated by SES Technology Ventures LLC.

2. What BarkScope is

BarkScope is a bioacoustic measurement instrument for companion-animal vocalizations. It analyzes acoustic properties of pet sounds (pitch, duration, tonality, harmonics-to-noise ratio) and presents findings alongside peer-reviewed research citations.

BarkScope is NOT:

A medical or veterinary diagnostic tool
A replacement for professional veterinary advice
A pet "translator" that assigns human language to animal sounds

Observations are based on published bioacoustic research but reflect general findings, not diagnosis of your specific animal. Always consult a licensed veterinarian for health concerns.

3. Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to use BarkScope. If you are under 18, you must have permission from a parent or guardian. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13.

4. Accounts

You can use BarkScope without an account for your first recording. To save recordings, you need a free account. You are responsible for keeping your login credentials secure. You agree to provide accurate information and to notify us if your account is compromised.

We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms, are fraudulent, or are inactive for more than 12 months.

5. Free and paid plans

Free: 5 recordings per month, 1 pet profile, 7-day visible history.

Pro (Monthly/Annual): Unlimited recordings, unlimited pets, full history, CSV export, Vet PDF reports, comparison view. 7-day free trial for first-time subscribers.

Vet PDF Report: One-time $9.99 purchase for non-subscribers. Included free with Pro.

Pricing may change with 30 days notice to active subscribers. Changes do not affect the current billing period.

6. Billing and cancellation

Pro subscriptions are billed via Stripe. You authorize recurring charges at the rate shown at checkout.

Trials: 7-day free trial for first-time subscribers. A valid payment method is required. You will be charged at the end of the trial unless you cancel.
Cancellation: Cancel anytime from Settings > Billing or via the Stripe Customer Portal. Access continues until the end of the current billing period.
Refunds: We do not offer refunds for partial billing periods. If you believe you were charged in error, contact us within 14 days.
Failed payments: If a payment fails, we will attempt to notify you. After a grace period, your account reverts to the Free plan.

7. Your data and content

You own your data. Recordings, acoustic features, pet profiles, tags, and notes belong to you. We store them on your behalf.

By using BarkScope, you grant us a limited license to process your audio and data solely for the purpose of providing the service (analysis, storage, display, export).

If you opt in to the Research program, you grant us a non-exclusive license to use anonymized acoustic features (not audio, not identifiable data) to improve our analysis models.

8. Audio recording and storage

Audio is analyzed locally in your browser. By default, audio files are uploaded to Firebase Storage for playback. You can disable audio storage in Settings > Audio.

You are responsible for obtaining any necessary consent before recording. Do not record people without their knowledge or consent. BarkScope is designed for pet vocalizations only.

9. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

Use BarkScope to harm, abuse, or endanger animals
Present BarkScope observations as veterinary diagnosis or medical advice
Reverse-engineer the analysis algorithms for competing products
Circumvent free-tier limits through multiple accounts
Upload content that is illegal, harmful, or violates others' rights
Attempt to access other users' data

10. Intellectual property

BarkScope's software, design, visualizations (including the constellation), brand assets, and analysis methods are owned by SES Technology Ventures LLC or its licensors. The peer-reviewed research we cite belongs to its respective authors.

You may share screenshots, share cards, and Vet PDF reports generated by BarkScope. You may not reproduce the BarkScope application or its core analysis logic.

11. Disclaimer of warranties

BarkScope is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-infringement.

We do not warrant that BarkScope will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that analysis results are accurate for any specific animal or situation.

12. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, SES Technology Ventures LLC shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of BarkScope, including but not limited to:

Decisions made based on BarkScope observations
Failure to detect or misclassification of vocalizations
Loss of data or recordings
Service interruptions

Our total liability for any claim shall not exceed the amount you paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim, or $50, whichever is greater.

13. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless SES Technology Ventures LLC from any claims, damages, or expenses arising from your use of BarkScope or violation of these terms.

14. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Georgia, without regard to conflict of law principles. Any disputes will be resolved in the state and federal courts located in Gwinnett County, Georgia.

15. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. Material changes will be communicated via email or in-app notification at least 30 days before taking effect. The "last updated" date at the top reflects the current version. Continued use after changes constitutes acceptance.
