Measurement, not translation
“Dog translator” apps that turn a bark into a sentence are entertainment — there’s no scientific method to convert a bark into specific words, and researchers who study dog vocalizations are careful to say so. What science can do is measure the acoustic features of a bark and describe what those features tend to be associated with across many dogs.
For example, work going back to Morton’s (1977) motivation-structural rules found that lower, harsher sounds tend to accompany assertive or hostile states, while higher, more tonal sounds accompany fear, appeasement or friendliness. Pongrácz and colleagues (2005, 2010) showed that people can reliably judge the context of a bark from its acoustics alone. Those are the patterns this tool surfaces — grounded, cited, and honest about their limits.
What each acoustic feature tells you
Pitch (F₀) reflects body size and arousal — higher barks skew toward excitement, play or anxiety; lower barks toward warning or assertiveness. Pitch range tracks how much the bark sweeps; wide modulation correlates with higher arousal. Duration separates a quick alert from a prolonged, distressed bout. Tone (tonal vs. noisy) distinguishes a clear bark from a growl-bark hybrid. Voice clarity (harmonics-to-noise ratio) drops with roughness and strain.
